    Battery?

    Hi all,

I'm very new to biking (only a few months in) my first bike is a 2013 MT-09 ABS. Unfortunately due unforeseen circumstances I have been unable to ride/start the bike for a good 3 weeks.
I went to start her around 4 days ago and it wouldn't start. Display screen was on and working as usual but when I went to start the bike it was just making what I can only describe as a loud purring noise (which is coming from under the seat). As the bike is alarmed I just put this down to it draining the battery over the period of time it hadn't been started.
In the mean time I have purchased an Oxford solar powered trickle charger to try and charge the battery up abit. It has only been connected approx 2 days, I went to start it earlier and still nothing.

Firstly am I right in assuming this issue is the battery and secondly am I doing the right thing in sticking it on the trickle charger and will it start in a few days?

Apologies if this is a silly post and questions but I am not very mechanical minded and am very new to the joys of biking.

    Regards,
    Jambo.

    Hi Jambo

Sounds like the battery. I would suggest a mains powered charger in the current climate, although the battery may have become so discharged it is knackered.

Possibly the starter solenoid, check and clean and crud/corrosion

Dis-connect battery first though to be safe while cleaning.

Get or borrow a voltmeter and check the state of the battery and as chump suggested get a mains powered charger preferably an optimate

As bloggsy said, try a decent charger, something like an optimate which checks it can hold a charge. Either that or try a jump start from another bike or bump starting it

Keep in mind you need a charger for gel batteries..
My bike is needed every day riding to recharge battery during its 3rd winter..
So i ride it every shiny/cloudy day and let it parked when is raining/snowing.
If i'd had let it "sleep" for long period of time it will needed a new battery for sure.
Next Monday, at 35000km oil change i will recharge mine's as it seems "tired" when starting the engine cold and i'll put a "fresh" clutch cable.

If there is not enough juice in the battery to prime the fuel system surely it will not bump start????

Several years ago bought a CTEK XS 0.8 battery charger which I use on my MT09 OEM battery. Far better than anything else I've owned in the past for battery health. Suitable for WET, MF, Ca/Ca, AGM and GEL Batteries. http://www.ctek.com/gb/en

If you have a vehicle you don't use that option they've come up with a 'clean hands' option for keeping an eye on things ... https://youtu.be/AB9YN0DY6Zk

I had a hell of a job starting my tracer after leaving it in the garage for a couple of months. Charged up the battery, ka-chunk ka-chunk ka chunk... (my version of the motor turning over :-) What I had to do was turn it over the the throttle wide open for a few seconds and she roared into life. Today, as it was dry I rode it into work to get it going a bit (it's started raining now...) Just saying...
