Just had my first service done today and I feel robbed. £148 for an oil and filter change. Some nonsense about 'checking things' but on the basis that I've had to tighten bolts and apply thread-lok to the loose handlebar clamp myself, just what the hell was the 'stealer' thinking?

The Tracer is great provided you can get beyond the terrible screen, terrible seat and terrible ride. Most of that I've done by spending more to change them. Yes, you get these tools on the forum saying 'it was built to a budget'...blah, blah, blah but it really p**ses me off that Yamaha built a bike so crap that it needs a service at 600 miles (my Audi does 20,000 before the first service is due!) and then charge you a fu**ing fortune for the privilege of being a beta tester for their POS that is still not ready for prime time.
I should have stuck with Honda or Kwak like I've owned for the last 20 years. Lesson learned.

I agree, Motorcycle technology is falling way behind cars regarding Fuel economy & Servicing etc.
But Honda, Kawasaki and all the others are just as bad compared to Yamaha reference having to have a first 600 Mile Service :(

As Normsthename and chippy said, all new bike require a 600 mile check-up service, and to be honest motorcycle use the same oil for the engine, gearbox and clutch so it makes sense to change the oil quick when its new, as you will have all the sharp bits of metal floating around the whole engine from all the gears meshing together nicely. you dont want all that crap left in there for 20,000 mile like your aldi (audi).

I've not had my first service yet but i was told when i picked the Tracer up that i would only be charged for oil & a filter, all labour was FOC, every new bike i have owned has had to have a first service after run in & the Tracer is no different in that respect so personally i don't see that as a problem.
One other thing to bear in mind, it could be that oil deteriation due to higher revs & higher temperatures is another reason to have shorter service intervals on most bikes, even if my bike had a 10 or 20K service interval i would still be changing the oil more regularly myself.

I get the point about the first service and it being the case for all bikes. I take exception to the stealer charging labour and think the manufacturer should pay that. If they can't build or test something well enough that sharp bits of metal are floating around, why should I be charged for their crap QA when I've just forked out £x thousand for the bike? Mesh the bloody gears together in the factory before putting it in the bike to stop the 'metal bits' flying around. Or pay to have this remedial work done themselves rather than charging me...again.

Perhaps it's down to the dealer then as mine have said no labour charge, in all honesty i would have thought that dealers could fund the first service themselves anyway, drain old oil, replace filter, re fill oil & a cursery glance at important areas, 30 minutes should cover it.

Had my 600 mile service today waited at dealers while they did it one and a half hours paid for parts only £40.13 .

The first service has never been free here in Australia (with motorcycles). Really, it isn't anywhere. The cost will just be built in at the sale time. It isn't just an oil and filter change, by rights, the throttle plates should be checked for synchronisation. It isn't hard, but the tubes do need to be connected to the intake manifold ports, and this will probably mean the removal of the tank and airbox.
The extended service intervals on cars are being driven by customer pressure and the need to reduce environmental waste. There are some cases where engine oil isn't changed for very long periods, but that can only be achieved with highly specialised oil.
I got charged $198AUD for my first service, I thought that was fair enough.

Just looked at page 11 of warranty book, sticker over paragraph saying free labour, it now says 1st service £149, can any bike shop do it, or is it supplying dealer only,

Just looked at my warranty booklet and it has a couple of stickers on there covering over heaven knows what.

The guy at the dealer where I bought mine said that Yamaha discontinued the free first service on new bikes a couple of years ago so they could keep their headline prices down.

I think that when the first service was free it had to be done by the supplying dealer. But now it's charged for I'm sure it can be any dealer, though probably it's best to go to a franchised one. I had my 600-mile service done a week ago (at On Yer Bike). I paid £113 (1 hour labour, oil, filter, environmental charge - still a rip-off for stuff I could easily do myself, but there you go). But I told them not to touch the chain (it's one of my fetishes - I know how I like it to be adjusted and lubed, and they know me well enough to respect that), so that might have reduced the labour bill a bit.

I think I'll use the guy that normally services for me, he uses genuine parts so warranty will still be intact, I'll ask him first though:)

Same here. The variances in pricing is probably due to geographical reasons.

2nd Service

How much is 2nd service? Considering buying a tracer but it's due it's 1st yr service. Had the 600 mile service done. I'm gonna try reduce the amount seller wants by at least cost off 2nd service.
