Would you prefer budget& fun or

Just toss this one out there. What would you prefer ,(1) a budget built bike that was great fun and reliable comes with a two year warranty(MT09).
Or spend an extra £2.5k /£2k on an MT09 with much better build quality, this would include proper front and rear Suspension?
Curious to how folk think.

I have 2015 '09, bought new in October that year, and I love it. Had I be in the market now for one, a '17 model will have been on the cards I guess (hating the insectile lights though). I'd still have upgraded the suspension regardless, and would love the quick shifter.

I am happy with my 2016 tracer now I've spent £1000 on the suspension and another £100 or so on screen & Giles chain tensioners so for me £1200 tops has made my tracer very good,it would have been better if they just came sorted in the first place and I would have been happy to spend another £1500 for it to come sorted in the first place,it's not just Yamaha that fit cheap suspension they are all at it,the worst suspension ive had was on a 2014 triumph daytona which just couldn't cope with bumpy roads,LewFz1 what other things do you think need doing to the mt09 ?.

My wish list for the MT09 as straight out of the box (I am not talking Tracer) Slipper clutch,Suspension, twitchy throttle sorted, decent lights, non cheese chain adjusters, Rad guard, Wing mirrors that actually are of use.
I love my 09 not had so much fun on a bike for years. I have done a couple of long haul tours on it now. A lot of folk complain about the stock seat but I find it not to bad.
I am likely to be doing more touring now so , I have the Shad soft panniers and associated frame work, very good gear.
As said I am going to be doing more touring I think when the time comes to replace my 09 I will most likely go for the Tracer next time around more for the bigger fuel tank than anything else.

The tracer is a a good choice regards protection & bigger fuel tank if you don't go over 80 and just use the half the Rev range when going through the gears you can get 200 miles, I had a naked street triple R which I did loads of big days on and it used to knock fxxk out of me so I am glad I bought a tracer as its still a laugh but comfy,last year I did Leeds to Oban in the day afew times and felt fine.

I have a 15 plate 09 and I guess the best option would be to do what Triumph are doing with their new Street Triple range

i.e. give buyers the option of a basic bike or upgraded versions.

Personally I'd like a bigger tank (but don't want a Tracer) and better lights and suspension which, hopefully, may be addressed on the new version. Maybe a steering damper too.

Thinking about it your probably better with Yamaha selling you the basic bike then you getting it sorted by a supension specialist who can make your suspension to suit you plus it will work out cheaper,a £1000 is not much to have your suspension sorted it amazes me that folks quibble over spending on there suspension but will think nothing to spending the same on a exhaust or can!.

the suspension is worth the extra but would it be right for you, out of the box? Unlikely as we're all different weights so it would be money wasted. I sorted mine for £800. What would it cost for Yamaha to add in that on the price? £2k?

Don't have a problem with mirrors, seat, throttle. Slipper clutch is a waste of money on the road. Rad guard should be standard.

My first one was a 2007 SI UK spec bike My last one was a new 2010 unreg bike I got in 2013 in Spain so EU spec bike.DSCF1036.jpg

Personally I prefer to get the bike relatively cheaply, and have the option of doing upgrades.

Mine is a 2015 model that I bought in early 2016, so it came with the Akra pipe. I sold that to a mate as I prefer stealth when I'm blasting round the Cotswolds. The only things I've added are a touring screen, crash bungs (a must on any bike I buy) and a rad guard. I can live with the suspension

If the price had been, say, £1500 more I'd probably have bought a Z800 instead - it doesn't have the character of the MT's triple engine, and it weighs a bit more, but the suspension is noticeably sweeter.

That is one thing that does amuse me is some folk will spend a grand on the Akra setup but not £30/50 on a Rad guard. If it was not already on any bike I have owned it was the first accessory I bought.
My to do list on any bike I have had has Always been, Rad Guard , crash bobbins, Fly screen if a naked bike, Front fender extender, If required wing mirror extenders, Chain oiler and ASAP get rid of the stock tyres as they are usually crap.

Oh, yes, I forgot the fender-extender.

I still have the stock Dunlop tyres - my Yorkshire heritage won't allow me to ditch them until they are well and truly "used". Normally, I quite like Dunlops, though I'm not sure about these OE ones that came on the bike. Roadsmarts will probably be going on to replace them.
