ZX10 shock conversion

I just had a call with the guy who sold me the shock.
He said that is from a Kawasaki ZX10R '08 (180HP) and according Marthy's array it has adjustuble height !
Maybe that is an extra advantage..
Tommorow he will try to find the ZX's owner's manual to send it to me for further infos.

Finally i found the specific spring preload to achieve the correct sag for my weight.
My other settings are HSB (14mm nut) 2T from fully open, LSB 1T, REB 1,5T.
When i had reduced those settings my bike was not absorving the road surface good enough for my body weight (that is about 150lbs)..
Now the rear wheel has more grip/adhesion than before !
I'm feeling like i've bought a "new bike" and i need to get used the new suspension.

Just store to remember my current settings at the ZX shock which are: HSB=2,5T, LSB=1,5T, REB=1,5T... I'm still looking for the "best setting" by testing on all my everyday commuting circumstances..(i just gave LSB half of a turn to see how it works).
When i'm hitting on road bumps the shock is snapping back rapidly.. does this happened due to High Speed Bouncing ? If it is from HSB then i must reduce it some...

Well, i've reduce some the LSB and REB by 1/4 of a turn.. so now i'm on LSB 1&1/4T and REB at 1&1/4 too..
The bike seems to have softer reactions now (and that is the "point" for me).... allthough the Ohlins specialist insists to put it back at his settings and to try to get used them..
As he told me, HSB doesn't matter so much as the other 2 settings do !

I 've finally found the best set up for the ZX shock !
After weeks of trying to discover the best rider's sag for my weight (70kg=154lbs) i 've find out that is 37mm... same as Martin (marthy) suggests.
I did many changes to put more or less sag but 37mm "is here to stay"..
At the last setting i made it softer and it works amazing !
My "Track" is a well known seaside curvy road... from Lagonisi (where my house is) to Lake Vouliagmeni and back (for the people who like to find it in Google maps).
The bike is solid, it turns quickly all the way down, the crown of my rear PR4 is now touching the tarmac all the way...
When being at the entrance of a corner/turn the bike is planted.. after the apex the bike is trying to spinning on heavy acceleration and feels like is trying to oversteer as it is still lyed down !!
Never felt this phenomenon before !
ZX shock is the best cheapest modification we can do on MT-09s !
Also i have to say that just a difference of a quarter of a turn on dumping settings makes a lot of sense..
Personally i don't have any care to spend my money on radiator guards, tail-tides etc. but i love to invest them on modifications that could help me be faster and safer...
Special thanks to Marthy and My Toy who had encouraged me on my efforts :cool:
P.S. all these days i saw a lot of Utube videos of Dave's Moss who has helped me to understood how to find the best settings.
So, i would suggest it even to riders who have spend a lot of money for buying Ohlins/Mupo/Mattrix/Penske etc. shocks, cause i don't believe that they handles better than Marthy's modification !
Just a ride on a MT-09 with ZX shock with 37mm rider's sag could prove if i'm right...

I saw in an older post of yours that you did not like the mid range vibration of the MT-09? Yet you decided to buy anyway? Please advise. I am considering a purchase myself. Either this or the triumph Tider 800. Thanks. Pardon posting in this thread.

Glad your bike is on rail!

If your bike still get loose a bit under hard acceleration, try to open the LSB a bit. That should let the rear end set a bit better on initial throttle.

I was reffering to MT-07 not the 09..
Between Tiger800 and MT-09 i would choose the cheaper..

You mentioned flash ECU, has yours been done? what was the end result like? how much and where did you get it done?





I'm using the 2008-2010 ZX10 shock. 8mm longer (10mm more rake measure at axle) 9.1kg/mm spring with 35mm rider sag (im 175lbs w/o gear)

LSB: all open
HSB: 1T in from full soft (start all open... add if needed)
REB: 1.25T in from full soft

Front I'm using .90kg/mm springs with GP piston kit and 130mm oil level. If you keep oem valving go with 10W shock oil same oil level.

Tire wear last track day (Q2s)

For everyone who use '08-'10 ZX10R rear shock on his MT-09 i 've put HSB and LSB 2 turns out from full in and REB 0,5 turn out from full in.
Rider sag was set at 37mm with me (150lb/68kg) .
For my weight the 9,1kg/mm spring's length is setted at 176mm
So i have (from reference points) free sag 50mm, static sag 48mm and rider sag 46,3mm... due to the soft spring.
Allthough the handling is amazing!!
I enjoyed cornering all the summer..PR4s rules and still suffer on their limits... now on 20.600km.
HSB and LSB hardening is the answer to the soft spring's (even for my light body) behaviour.
High Speed Bouncing helps the shock to respond when the wheel hits on a bump.
Low Speed Bouncing helps the shock to respond in normal road's surfaces.
Fast rebound helps the soft spring to "read" the tarmac better.
BUT now the bike is great only for solo riding... no problem for me..
